Practicalities of Dermatology Topical Treatments

This session will focus on practical dermatology. Topical treatments are widely prescribed for many skin conditions; correct use and adherence are key to ensure the best outcomes for the patient.  Emollients are very important in dry and chronic skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis. Complete emollient therapy includes washing and moisturising daily, patient choice and application will be discussed.  Topical corticosteroids are first-line for inflammatory and acute skin conditions, they need to be prescribed according to the age of the patient, severity and body location. Guidance will be given on correct application  with finger tip units (FTUs),  length of treatment and advice given on addressing patient concerns. Scalp treatments need precise application, and practical tips will be discussed.   Learning outcomes  By the end of this session delegates will have  Updated evidence-based management in when to prescribe/advise topical treatments To have gained practical knowledge on topical treatment application Increased clinical confidence in advising patients on correct use and application of topical treatments
