Using Decision Aids to Personalise Patient Care

16 May 2024
Podiatry and Foot Health Programme

As healthcare professionals are we ready to reframe our patient consultations with 'what matters to you' or 'what would you like to know'? Enabling an individual to take control of their health supports a personal approach unique to them. The 2023 WHO patient safety campaign 'Elevate the voice of patients' called on all stakeholders to ensure patients are active partners in their own care.  This year NHS England launched a suite of patient decision making aids as a strategy to empower patients to be involved in their own health care.  Decision aids have been shown to improve shared decision making between patients and healthcare professionals and supports a personalised care approach by informing patients in making the right choice for them. Researchers at the University of Southampton and the University of Plymouth are looking at the development of footwear and off-loading device selection decision aids to reduce the risk of diabetes-related foot ulceration.  This session looks to explore: 1. Personalised care and share decision making 2. The use of decision making aids in patient care 3. Research into decision making aids to off-load the foot for those individuals living with diabetes.
